Alliance Doughnut and Gelato Night

In June we had another Alliance Eikaiwa in-school event. This time, it was the English-only Doughnut and Gelato Night in the Moriguchi school. The doughnuts and gelato were from local small businesses. I bought six kinds of doughnuts at Le Sourire, in the Senbayashi shopping arcade. They were made from rice flour, so they were gluten-free doughnuts.  I bought five kinds of gelato at Kanon gelato shop. This shop is near the Moriguchi school. Everyone enjoyed the food, and we also enjoyed meeting and talking with each other.  Now the next challenge is planning a bigger event in the future. Shopping Arcades

I like to visit shopping arcades. Every time I visit a different city in Japan, I walk around the train station area and look for the local shopping arcade. When I can walk through the arcade, I can imagine life in the city. In my hometown of Honolulu, there are shopping malls just like Aeon malls. When I go to a shopping mall in Japan, it feels like I am in America again. But when I walk around shopping arcades, I feel different. Big shopping arcades, like in Tenjinbashi-suji or Shinsaibashi, are fine, but I like the local ones more. I use the Keihan main line, so I often go […]

Avengers and Big Numbers

Last weekend, the latest Marvel movie, “Avengers: Endgame” opened in many movie theaters around the world.  From the opening until April 28th, the ticket sales have been amazing.

Talking about topics like money and business is a good way to practice English.  How do you say big numbers? In English, the names for numbers move up by three digits, not four like in Japanese.
